We have addition to our house in the works that includes a garage, but that doesn’t kick off until summer. So my fantastic wife bought me a carport tent thingy for my birthday so that the 1502 has a home when it arrives. This one in fact.
We assembled
the frame yesterday, but you can’t install the canopy until the frame is squared and anchored. Asphalt being the trash material that it is, happens to be terrible to anchor in. My best friend who’s a former mason recommended that I cut out and dig a 12" diameter 18" deep holes at each of the 8 points of contact. I started on one and though “fuck this noise.”
So I did a little research and found !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! They seem to be more than enough rated for 15oo lbs each. So $136 later I ordered 12 of them. Most expensive anchors I have ever purchased, but it beats cutting and digging 8 holes then pouring concrete.

Seems legit. It will also depend on how thick the AC is, if it is to thin like 2-3" you will probably not get much of the rated hold down capacity. Just grout the shit out if it and it should be fine.

Yea I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on it on the first few windy days. I’ve drilled three holes about 5"-6" deep. I haven’ t hit dirt but I’m guessing there’s gravel under the asphalt. Even if I don’t get full hold down capacity. 12 of them should be enough.

Or use some kind of stakes, like the corkscrew kind, and screw them into the grass next to the structure. Probably hold quite a bit. But if it's windy enough for that, the wind is probably harming your tent in other ways already.

Anyhow, if your car needs a garage, unless it's a Special Project, your car is probably too nice.

Would a Redhead anchor not work?

We have always used 5 gallon buckets of concrete with an I bolt pushed in the top. The wind will shred your “garage” before it goes airborne.

Good call. That's money well spent!

You’d not necessarily anchor to the asphalt as it’s relatively thin and breaks very easily. When tents and other temp structures are installed in asphalt parking lots, they usually rely on really long steel bars driven straight into the ground. This would probably be acceptable for your application as well. I seriously doubt that your carport canopy and the rigging for it is strong enough to pull out two, let alone 4 or 8 anchors.

Even though it seems counterintuitive, i t does say “Bonding the anchor to the gravel, in addition to the bond to the asphalt, using grout also adds pull resistance.”
You’d think 1500 lbs per anchor pull resistance would be enough. Where’s
an engineer to calculate the wind forces on your structure?

It’s nice and it’s old. I don’t care so much about rain, but I don’t want snow sitting on it.

That’s what I used to test and it and it did work. I just don’t think it will in warmer weather. The kickstand for the grom sinks into the asphalt on slightly warm day.

Yea I’m saying (as another oppo did) that canopy rips waaaay before it yanks the anchors out of the ground
